Tonight I’m at Maggie Miley’s in Normal, IL for a happy hour for a coworker (@ChristyBerka) who is moving on to bigger and better things. So, as you can see by my photo, we went out to raise a glass to her. This bar always seems to have Warsteiner on tap, and they always serve it in a huge glass, so I went for the Dunkel.
Numbers: 4.9% ABV
Appearance & Aroma: As you can see, it had a nice sized, creamy, lightly khaki-colored head on it. The head stuck around throughout, leaving some nice lacing on the glass. The aroma was lightly malty with a light earthy-hop noticeable as well.
Taste & Feel: The body was a bit lighter than I was expecting, but might fall in the medium range. However, the creamy head added a soft and smooth mouthfeel. Up front it was lightly malty with some light caramel, breadiness, and a hint of roastiness. In the middle and finish a lightly earthy/piney hop flavor came through.
Food Pairing: This beer was light enough that it would pair with almost anything, but I would pair this with the bangers and mash on the menu. The beer has enough flavor to match it, but is light and drinkable enough that it wouldn’t fill you up (allowing this hearty meal to do so).
Overall Impression: The body and creaminess were solid, yet the flavor and smoothness made it tremendously drinkable. Despite the large glass, this beer went down pretty quickly. Even though it was so drinkable, that doesn’t mean it didn’t lack flavor, as I appreciated the slight toastiness in it. Overall, I thought this was a pretty good beer, and since it’s a little lower in alcohol, it was especially a good one to enjoy on a night out with friends.
