I’ve been busy today, while my wife has been napping because she’s not feeling very good. The weather is finally starting to get a little bit better, and it’s a really nice day outside. So, I decided to sit down, enjoy the sunlight in the kitchen, and have this beer. I got this bottle from my friend Betty, who lives in Tacoma, Washington and Portland, Oregon. She sent it as a housewarming/new job gift.
Location: Poured into a pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL
Numbers: 6.7% ABV, 67 IBUs, 16.7 OG, 200 Calories
Ingredients: Malts: 2-Row Pale Barley, Munich 10L, Caramel, Carapils; Hops: Nugget, CTZ
Appearance & Aroma: It’s golden-orange in color, and pretty clear. It had a big thick billowing head which fell after a few minutes to a thin creamy layer of bubbles across the top, which left some really nice lacing. The aroma is earthy and grassy hops.
Taste & Feel: The body is light-medium and the mouthfeel is pretty crisp. There’s a honey maltiness and a bit of a citrus hop juiciness behind the crispness up front. In the middle, the citrusy hop flavor grows and is joined with some earthy bitterness. The finish is a mix of citrusy and earthy hop bitterness and flavor, which lasts several minutes in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This beer has a lot of citrus and earthy hop flavors. Therefore, I’d probably pair it with a pork dish, such as seasoned pork chops or a tenderloin.
Overall Impression: From having other Pyramid beers, I was expecting it to be a bit light and crisp. I enjoyed the honey maltiness and hop juiciness up front, and as you’d expect the hop flavors took over in the finish. The mix of citrus and earthy hops was pretty good. Overall, it was a decent IPA I wouldn’t turn down if it was offered to me, although there wasn’t much that stood out about it.
