Tonight when I got home from work, I thought I would reach into the beer fridge and find the most unique thing I could. The decision was pretty clear when I stumbled across an O’Fallon Cherry Chocolate beer in the back of my fridge. I picked this one up around Christmas time when I was brewing a chocolate covered cherry imperial stout.
The bottle says that it is a malt beverage with natural flavors. It had a nice creamy head, which stuck around, and was a clear gold/brown color. The aroma was definitely a strong sweet chocolate smell and it had almost like an alcoholic sharpness in the nose.
I can’t remember the brand, but I had a chocolate soda once, and this both smelled and tasted like that sort of sweet chocolate extract flavor – sort of like a chocolate Tootsie Pop. Since it says it has natural flavors, I can only assume they use flavor extracts, because otherwise, I’d guess it was artificially flavored. The taste had that sweet chocolate flavor with a bit of sweet cherry flavor in the finish.
Overall, it doesn’t taste at all like a beer, but instead it tastes like a candy or dessert beverage. The only foods I could recommend enjoying this with would be chocolate desserts, but even then, all the chocolate flavors could be a little overwhelming. To be honest, I’m not sure I’d buy this again.
