After having the Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan Nut Brown, I was feeling like something hoppy to finish off the night.  The bartender again let me try several samples to see if there was anything I might like (although I didn’t mentioned that I’d tried about half of the ones he was giving me before).  I’d remembered have a couple Belgian IPAs, and really enjoyed Flying Dog’s Raging Bitch, so the bartender suggested this one (also perhaps because I think it was $9 for this little glass).

Location: On tap at the Flying Saucer in Nashville, TN.

Numbers: 9% ABV, 18 °Plato OG, ~270 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It was a hazy golden color with a thin creamy head.  However, you can see it left surprisingly great lacing on the glass.   There was a good lemony-citrus aroma with some bubblegum-like smells as well.

Taste & Feel: I instantly noticed the crispness of the beer, both from carbonation and from citrusy hop flavors.  The body was medium, but lighter than I expected on a 9% ABV beer.  There was a lemony and Belgian malt flavor in middle with a very solid citrus bitterness in finish.  There was a bit of Belgian spiciness or slight peppery flavors in the middle and finish I picked up on the more I drank it.

Food Pairing: I’m not sure you’d want to have food with this beer (you could just enjoy it on its own), but if you did, I’d recommend something light that would match the lemony-citrus flavors.  I think it might go nice with a light fish dish or some shrimp scampi.

Overall Impression: The flavorful citrusy bitterness made my mouth pucker and salivate a bit.  I enjoyed the mix of citrus hoppiness with the very light Belgian spiciness.  I could have done with slightly less lemon flavors and a bit more grapefruit, but overall, I thought this was a very good beer.

My Rating: ★★★½☆
