After having the STLIPA and Winged Nut at Urban Chestnut, my friend Joe and I headed over to Six Row in St. Louis on our “mini-micro tour” (stopping at 3-4 microbreweries today). We were bummed we missed out on their bacon infused “Porked Porter” yesterday. Additionally, their taps seemed a bit limited, as the bartender mentioned that they were preparing for the St. Louis Brewers Heritage Festival next weekend. After having the STLIPA, and since Joe was driving, I went for their double IPA.
Location: On tap at Six Row Brewing in St. Louis, MO.
Numbers: 8.4% ABV, 68 IBUs, 8 SRM, 18 Plato OG, ~ 240 Calories
Ingredients: Hops: Columbus, Centennial, and Chinook
Appearance & Aroma: The beer was served in a 10oz snifter and was dark orange, almost brown in color. There was almost no head, with only a thin ring of carbonation around the glass. There was a slight citrus hop aroma with a little bit of caramel maltiness.
Taste & Feel: It had a very smooth mouthfeel, and was medium to full bodied. There was a sweet caramel and slightly bready maltiness up front, followed by a decent amount of citrus hop flavor. The hop flavor was mostly citrus in the finish, but with a bit more resiney-piney flavors coming through.
Food Pairing: The big flavor and big ABV of this beer calls for a hearty meal to match it. I would pair this with a nice, thick, juicy burger. There caramel and breadiness would mix well with the burger and bun, while the citrus and slightly resiney flavors would add a nice complexity to the meal.
Overall Impression: While the hop flavors definitely dominated in the finish, it was obvious that this had a healthy malt backbone. It’s hard to call a double IPA drinkable, but it was very smooth and easy drinking. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good beer.
