338. Ferguson Brewing – Pecan Brown Ale

Ferguson Brewing Pecan Nut Brown AleAfter playing in a golf tournament today and having a bunch of Bud Select and an Alexander Keith’s Nova Scotia Style Brown Ale, Joe and I headed over to Ferguson Brewing company for a beer.  Joe told me that along with their Imperial Vanilla Bourbon Porter (which wasn’t available), they’re known for this beer.  The bartender was awesome, giving us samples of at least 4 other beers on tap.  Even better, after finishing our beers, we noticed they were brewing and asked if we could get a tour.  We were given a tour of the brewery by brewer Josh “Wolfgang” Wilson and talked with him for quite a bit.  He’s an incredibly nice and passionate guy and we really appreciated meeting him and getting a tour around the brewhouse.

Location: On tap at Ferguson Brewing in St. Louis, MO.

Numbers: 4.9% ABV, 30 IBUs, 12 Plato OG, ~ 158 Calories

Ingredients: Malt: 2-row, Special Roast, Victory,Chocolate, Wheat; Hops: Willamette, Cascade; Additions: Pecans added to the mash

Appearance & Aroma: It was dark brown in color and appeared to be slightly hazy.  There was a thin, creamy, white head on it, that left some pretty good lacing on the glass.  There was a nutty and caramel malt aroma to it.

Taste & Feel: The mouthfeel was smooth and the body was light-medium.  There was a good dose of nuttiness and caramel maltiness in the middle.  In the finish, the pecan flavor came through a bit more along with a slight bit of earthy bitterness.

Food Pairing: An obvious choice to pair this beer would be pecan pie, as the beer would match the flavors quite nicely.  However, I think the nutty and caramel flavors would also go well with BBQ, or even to help cool down or add some sweetness to something like spicy pad thai.

Overall Impression: It was hard not to try to compare this with Lazy Magnolia’s Southern Pecan Nut Brown I had a couple of weeks ago.  While the intensity of the nuttiness was not as strong, I found it to be a more drinkable beer.  I enjoyed the nutty and sweet caramel malt flavors and thought, overall, that it was a pretty good beer.

My Rating: ★★★½☆
