A friend from the ABNormal Brewers gave me a call and said that he was also out in Denver for the Great American Beer Festival. He was also interested in checking out Great Divide, so I grabbed another beer and a chair and waited for him to come by.
The Hoss Rye lager was clear and red in color, not reddish, but red – the reddest beer I’ve ever seen. There was, as you can see, an amazingly large and creamy white head, which kept growning, even as I knocked some of the head off it would grow back and overflow. After I knocked most of the head off, there was a malty aroma noticeable.
Despite the large, creamy head, it had a light body and a
Amazingly large and growing creamy off white head. There was a bit of a light maltiness up front, giving way to a little bit of a caramel maltiness. The flavor reminded me a lot of an Octoberfest style, although there was a tiny bit of rye spiciness in the finish.
If I had to pair this with a food, I think it would go well with a thick mexican food dish. The maltiness would add to a beef and beans type dish, and the lightness of the beer would make way for the thickness of the dish.
Overall, I thought this had a very nice flavor to it with a lighter body. I could have done without the overflowing head, but once I got past that, I enjoyed this one – especially nice for this hot summer day in Denver.
