353. Flossmoor Station – Rail Splitter IPA

Triton Brewing - Rail Splitter IPAI’m at my homebrew club meeting tonight and decided to buy a drink before the meeting.  I was looking for something I haven’t had before, and the Rail Splitter IPA caught my eye.  I had no idea who made it, and another guy at the meeting and I sat there with our phones trying to figure it out (after we both ordered one).  Initially, I thought it was from Triton Brewing in Indianapolis, since theirs was the only Rail Splitter IPA I could find.  However, I followed up with Fat Jack’s, and was told it’s from Flossmoor Station.

Location: Enjoyed the draft beer, in a regular pint glass, at Fat Jack’s in Bloomington, IL.

Numbers: 7% ABV, 70 IBUs, 8.5 SRM, ~ 202 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It was very clear and had a light copper color to it.  There was almost no head on it, just a small ring of bubbles around the glass.  There was a light caramel malt aroma, along with a citrusy, slightly grassy hop aroma.

Taste & Feel: The body was light to light-medium, and the mouthfeel was quite crisp, but a little watery.  The crispness up front lead to a little bit of a caramel and bready malty flavor masked by a good amount of citrusy bitterness.  It finished with a good amount of citrus hop bitterness with a bit of grassy and piney hop flavors.  The finish was clean and crisp.

Food Pairing: This would go well with almost any pub type food, as the light crispness would help wash thick, greasy foods down.  I would especially recommend it to help wash down some slightly spicy bar foods like a pub burger with pepperjack cheese, or jalapeno poppers.

Overall Impression: I found this to be a very drinkable, crisp, IPA for a hot summer day.  It was light and crisp, but it was a bit watery – making drinkable, but only because it lacked the body I was expecting from an IPA.  Overall, I thought it was a good summer IPA, I was just expecting a bit more body with it.

My Rating: ★★½☆☆

  1. Railsplitter IPA has not gone into commercial production yet. Not for about 10 days. We would love to have you try the Railsplitter. We are confident it would rate highly! Cheers from your friends at Triton Brewing Company! David Waldman, Dir. of Operations, Triton Brewing Company.

  2. Was the Railsplitter IPA I had at Fat Jack’s not from Triton, or was it a test batch?

  3. We only know of one Railsplitter. None other exists that we know of. Test batches have not gone to market.

  4. After following up with Fat Jack’s bar, it turns out that this IPA is from Flossmoor Station, not Triton Brewing. I apologize for any confusion and have made corrections above. Looking forward to trying some of Triton Brewing’s beers for the blog in the future.

  5. It appears Flossmoor has recently changed the name from Rail Splitter to Rail Hopper, on the invoices it was still listed as Rail Splitter sorry for the confusion.
