Today is my wife’s birthday, and to celebrate, she wanted to take the kids to Indianapolis to visit the Children’s Museum. We were looking for unique places to eat, and a friend had recommended Bazbeaux Pizza. They had some great pizza as well as some local craft brews. I figured I’d start out easy with this IPA, and then afterward try their Double Dragonfly before heading off to the Children’s Museum.
Location: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, at Bazbeaux Pizza in downtown Indianapolis, IN.
Numbers: 6.5% ABV, 50 IBUs, 15.5 SG, 10.1 SRM, ~ 170 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: In the dimmly lit dining room, it appeared to be light amber in color. When I poured it into the glass, it had a thin head, which fell pretty quickly. There was decent sized earthy hop aroma.
Taste & Feel: The body was medium and the mouthfeel was slightly crisp. There were sweet, malty, caramel flavors up front, followed by a big, earthy, slightly spicy hop bitterness. The earthy and slightly spicy hoppiness grew in the finish and lasted for a little bit into the aftertaste.
sweet caramel malts upfront followed by a big greasy slightly spicy bitterness wage last in the aftertaste. Love the hop flavor in the fun
Food Pairing: After having the great pizza at Bazbeaux, it’s hard to imaging pairing this with anything else. The flavors mixed nicely with the cheese and spicy pepperoni flavors, adding a nice earthy bitterness to the bold pizza flavors.
Overall Impression: I really liked the caramel maltiness up front before the hop bitterness kicked in, proving it had a good, flavorful, malt backbone. When the hop bitterness kicked in, it was earthy with a little bit of spiciness, and I really enjoyed it. The balance of the two flavors was great, and the hop flavor was a bit complex and lasted into the aftertaste. Overall, I thought this was a very good beer.
