It’s the day after Thanksgiving, and we had a wonderful time yesterday with the family here at our house. I had plenty of my homebrew on tap, as well as lots of food. Today, I had to work from home, because with my new job I still don’t have a lot of vacation saved up. So, after getting plenty of work done, I decided to crack open this canned craft beer. SanTan Brewing sent me this beer a couple of months ago to try, and I had one can already, but I’ve been saving this one for a review. It says it was crafted on 8/21/14.
Location: Poured into a pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 5.5% ABV, 0 IBUs, ~200 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s brown in color, and very clear. It had a decent bright white head on it when I first poured it, but it fell to just a thin layer of bubbles across the top after a few minutes. It has an obvious carmel malty aroma.
Taste & Feel: The body is light and the mouthfeel his somewhat crisp. There’s some light, sweet caramel maltiness detected table behind the crispness up front. In the middle, the lightly sweet caramel maltiness opens up with some bready, grainy, and biscuity flavors mixed in. The finish still has lightly sweet maltiness with bready and buscuity flavors along with some light nuttiness. There’s some lightly earthy hoppiness to balance out the light sweetness. The light caramel, biscuit and nutty flavors last briefly in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This is light enough that it could go with almost anything, but I like to pair it with something that will complement the caramel flavor sin this beer. Therefore, I’d go with a burger, brat, or other grilled meat.
Overall Impression: I thought this beer had a fair amount of complex flavors, yet it was still light and drinkable enough to finish off a liter easily if you wanted to. I enjoyed the complex mix of malty flavors, which included some bready, caramelly, grainy, and biscuity flavors. Overall, I found this to be light and extremely drinkable, with great fall flavors. I’d love to get this beer in a much larger size so I can drink it from a big boot during Oktoberfest.
