16. Michelob – Hop Hound Amber Wheat Ale

Michelob Brewing Hop Hound Amber Wheat AleI’m getting ready to head out on the road again, and kept an eye on the kids while my wife ran to the grocery store.  She returned with a 6-pack of Michelob’s Hop Hound Amber Wheat Ale.  She’s a big fan of wheat beers, and I like amber ales, so she thought this might be one we’d both like.  It was something we could share before I headed out, and I really appreciated the thought.

First, the name is tremendously misleading, as it seems to me that something called “Hop Hound” should be hoppy.  However, it’s an amber wheat, so there’s not much hoppiness to it at all.

It was a slightly dark orange color and had a decent sized head.  There was some yeast sentiment at the bottom, which I stirred up and poured in, making it cloudy.  It smelled a bit malty with a slight fruitiness to it.  It was quite effervescent with all of the carbonation in it.  It had a malty, carmelly flavor with some fruity notes.  The fruity notes tasted a very slight bit like apricot.  As expected from a wheat beer, there was almost no hop bitterness noticeable.

The afternoon was getting warm, and it was a great beer enjoyed with lunch.  I had a turkey sandwich and it worked well with it.  However, overall, there’s not a tremendous amount of flavor to either a turkey sandwich or a wheat beer.  It was refreshing and a bit different than other wheat beers I’ve had.

Overall it was somewhat of a unique beer and style which I don’t think I’ve seen anywhere else.  It seems like it’s one of those beers that people who don’t often try more flavorful beer would like, and to them, would be a big step away from Bud Light.
