As I mentioned in my last post, we’re in Springfield, Missouri for work, and stopped at Springfield Brewing Company for dinner. I first had the Blacksmith Stout, and a dinner salad. I found out that the brewery was built to show off the stainless steel tanks made by the local Mueller steel factory. It looked gorgeous when we walked in, but being with a couple co-workers, I couldn’t explore the brewery too much. I was hoping to run into Ashton Lewis, or Mr. Wizard from BYO Magazine, but no luck there either.
The Pale Ale was very clear and was a light copper color with a quarter inch or so of a soapy head on it. The lacing it left was very nice. There was a pleasant piney and floral hop aroma with a nice bready malt smell.
It was light medium bodied and smooth and slightly creamy, making it extremely drinkable. There was a nice malty caramel and breadiness in the middle, followed by a nice piney floral hop flavor in the finish. The balance of light caramel, breadiness, and floral hops was great in the aftertaste.
The deluxe pizza I had was very good and seemed to have some pretty fresh ingredients, although I also envied the fish and chips Steve ordered. The Pale Ale probably would have gone with either meal very nicely, as the breadiness of the beer went well with the crispy crust on the pizza. I’d be willing to be that it would be a good beer with almost any item on the menu.
I thought it was very nicely balanced, with nice flavors coming through from both the malt and the hops. The drinkability was better than I’ve had with any of the recent beers I’ve had, I could have had a couple more of these. Overall, this is one of the better beers I’ve had in a while, and if you’re passing through Springfield, MO, stop here and bring me back a growler or 6-pack of this beer.
