We tried several beers at our ABNormal Brewers club meeting tonight, but I decided to review this one, since somehow, I ended up with a nearly full bottle of it. I wasn’t so lucky with the Schloss Eggenberg Samichlaus, but I’m definitely going to head over to Friar Tuck to get a couple bottles of it (Thanks to Edwin, a member of the club and employee of Friar Tuck for the presentation tonight).
As you can see, it was dark black, and had a very dark tan, almost brown, head on it. The head was very creamy and the beer appeared very viscous. I really enjoyed the aroma, which had a warm chocolate coffee-like smell.
It was definitely full-bodied and creamy, silky smooth to drink. The flavors were a bit chocolaty up front, followed by a smooth coffee flavor – meaning it lacked the astringent bitterness that often accompanies a coffee flavor. There was a hint of light vanilla and dark fruits. The aftertaste was smooth with a very slight alcohol heat.
This would be a great dessert beer to pair with a chocolate lava cake or fudge brownies. The cocoa flavors would mix well together, and the smooth, non-bitter coffee flavors would go better with these desserts than a cup of coffee, in my opinion.
It was a very smooth beer, with some nice warm flavors for a cold night in. For an imperial stout, it was very drinkable. Overall, I thought this was a very good imperial stout, which I would recommend.
