287. Kona Brewing – Longboard Island Lager

Kona Brewing Longboard Island LagerAs I mentioned in my last post, I was out at the Hickory Street Bar and Grill in Austin, TX at SXSW.  My new friend Robert and I enjoyed the view of Congress Ave. from their patio while we ate.  After starting with a Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale, I thought I’d try something else from them along with my meal.  The only other Kona beer on their menu was this one, so it made my decision easy.

Numbers: 4.6% ABV, 18 IBUs, 13 degrees plato OG, 177 Calories, Malts: Premium 2-Row Pale, Wheat, Hops: Mt. Hood, Hallertau, Czech Saaz

Appearance & Aroma: A very clear, golden color with a decent, creamy, bright white head.  The aroma was light, but I could pick up on light malts and cracker-like lager smell.

Taste & Feel: There was a good amount of carbonation in it, and there was a crisp, carbonation feel up front.  The middle had a very light malty taste, a bit like light crackers.  There was a hint of bitterness in the finish.  Overall, the flavors were very light and crisp.

Food Pairing: It went very nicely with my southwest chicken salad, and would probably go well with almost anything.  Since the flavors were very light, it might be best with some heavier, more flavorful foods, to help wash them down.

Overall Impression: This was a very, very drinkable beer – light, crisp, and refreshing.  If you’re looking for something with light flavors to drink on a hot summer day – perhaps after surfing – this would be a thirst quencher.

My Rating: ★★½☆☆
