I’m back in my hotel room after several days in Miami. It was time to pack up and get ready to head home, but I really needed a cold one to decompress from the day. I walked over to the gas station next to the hotel and looked to see what they had. My choices were Budweiser, Bud Light, Heineken, or this, a Foster’s oilcan. Since I hadn’t checked Foster’s off on my journey yet, it was a good beer to try while I packed my bags to head home.
Location: 25.4oz Oil can at the Residence Inn, Miami Airport
Numbers: 5% ABV, 227 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: There was a big, frothy white head on a very clear, bright yellow colored beer. The head fell pretty quickly, revealing a lightly malty, thin lager aroma.
Taste & Feel: The beer was light-medium bodied, smooth, and crisp. There was a good amount of carbonation up front, with a cracker-like breadiness in the middle. There was a little bit of bitterness in the finish along with a good amount of corn/malty/bready flavor.
Food Pairing: This beer is light enough in body and flavor that it could probably go with almost anything. However, I can help but think of drinking this with grilled shrimp (shrimp on the barbie) or a big steak (at Outback Steakhouse).
Overall Impression: It’s been a long time since I’ve had this beer, as I can remember it being a bit gimmicky to go out and get an oil can of Fosters. Much like many of the beers I had in college, it lacked a lot of flavor, except for a corn/malty/bready flavor. Much like the Kingfisher Premium Lager I had earlier today, it’s just another country’s version of a very pale lager – which is very crisp, drinkable, and refreshing, but lacks a lot of character.
