52. New Glarus Brewing – Road Slush Stout

New Glarus Brewing Road Slush StoutI got an email today that I was being followed on Twitter by New Glarus Brewery, so I thought I’d grab another one of their beers out of the beer fridge. I’ve only got a few left to choose from, so I grabbed the Road Slush Stout, even though it’s almost Memorial Day. It says it’s brewed with fresh oatmeal and includes chocolate and victory malts.

When I poured it, it was black with some ruby colors coming through when held up to the light. It had a very nice, thick and creamy head, which literally stayed almost a half inch thick for at least five minutes before I started drinking it. The aroma was a mix of chocolate and black patent maltiness, and it’s smell reminded me a lot of a Guiness.

The body was a bit on the medium to light side, but it was also very silky smooth and creamy.  Much like the smell, the taste had almost a debittered black patent and chocolate malt flavor.  There was no noticeable hop flavor. After sitting in my mouth a bit, it had a coffee and chocolaty flavor that lingered on.

I can’t really think of too many foods to pair this with, but because of the chocolate in the finish, I’m sure it would go well with anything with chocolate in it.  Overall, it is a pretty good beer – a tasty, flavorful stout, but with a light enough body to make it fairly refreshing.
