My sister is a big fan of my home brews, and shares those I give her with all her friends. She also tells them about this blog, and a few of them have sent me beers to review. This one (and another, with a review coming soon) were sent to me by her friend Brittany who lives not far from the Southern Tier brewery in New York. Thanks Britt!
The bottle says, “Brewed with 4 varieties mod hops and 4 types of malts.” it also has a 10/04/12 “date of birth” on it.
Location: Poured into a slightly curved pint glass from the 22oz bottle at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 5.5% ABV, 170 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s amber-orange in color and fairly hazy. It’s got a quarter inch thick, fluffy white head and an obvious, bright citrusy-piney-grassy hop aroma.
Taste & Feel: The body is light and the mouthfeel is smooth and slightly creamy from the fluffy head. There’s a light bready and yeasty flavor up front, followed by light lemongrass, citrus, and piney hop flavors in the middle. It finishes with bigger hop flavors and bitterness, with a mix of piney, grassy, lightly lemon and floral flavors. The piney and grassy hop flavors stick around in the aftertaste with a little bit of resinousness as well.
Food Pairing: This was a light and bright beer that could easily go with anything. However, I would likely pair it with a light fish dish, allowing the hop flavors to mix with the butter and seasonings on the fish.
Overall Impression: I thought this was an extremely drinkable beer, as the body was almost watery at points. It had a very good mix of hop flavors and bitterness, but I would have liked a bit more maltiness in the background. Overall, I thought it was a good beer, which would be a very nice beer to enjoy on a hot summer day. Huge thanks to Brittany for sending me this!
