As I mentioned with the Perennial Hommel Bier I had, my dad lives in St. Louis and I visit there often. I stopped by Perennial once and picked up a couple of beers, but I can’t remember when it was, and there’s no date on the bottle. The bottle says, “ Peace offering is un-American brown ale, brewed with a few hundred pounds of maple roasted Missouri squash. We hope you enjoy our take on autumn in that the flavors remind you of the many great offerings that come with this distinctively wonderful season.”
Location: Poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass from the 750ml bottle at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 6.3% ABV, 200 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s clear and brownish red in color, with a good amount of carbonation in it. There’s a thin, creamy, bright white head with a warm cinnamon aroma with hints of pumpkin and maple.
Taste & Feel: The body is light-medium, and the mouthfeel is fairly crisp from all the carbonation. The crispness made it tough to recognize any flavors up front, but in the middle, some caramel and maple flavors make up the backbone with some cinnamon flavor taking center stage. It finished with a mix of earthy bitterness and cinnamon-forward pumpkin pie spices. The cinnamon and pumpkin pie spices stick around for a while in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This beer has a good amount of pumpkin pie spices and cinnamon flavors mixed with maple and caramel maltiness. Much like other pumpkin beers, this would be a great beer to pair with Thanksgiving dinner, complete with turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes and gravy.
Overall Impression: I wasn’t sure what to expect from this beer, but I really enjoyed the warm caramel, cinnamon, and other pumpkin pie spices. It was not the type of pumpkin beer I normally like (liquid pumpkin pie), but instead, it was a unique mix of warm fall flavors. I think I’ll add a little maple syrup to my Great Pumpkin recipe to see how it changes the flavor. I thought this was, very smooth, drinkable, and enjoyable on a cold day like today.
