704. Dortmunder Actien Brauerei – DAB Original

704. Dortmunder Actien Brauerei - DAB OriginalAfter a long evening of hanging out in Columbia, MO for the evening – stopping at Logboat Brewing along the way – we went back to my friend Tom’s house to crash before the golf tournament in the morning. Tom is big into all things German, and has been there several times for Oktoberfest. He offered me this German bier he had in his fridge while we hung out chatting before bed. I have a bottle of this back in the beer fridge, but I think this canned version is probably fresher and in better shape than the one in the green bottle at home.

Location: Poured into a tumbler style pint glass from the can at my friend Tom’s home in Columbia, MO.

Numbers: 5% ABV, ~120 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It’s bright, pale-yellow in color, and very clear. There’s a very thin, fluffy white head on it that faded after a few minutes. The aroma is light with lager-like sulfer, cracker and honey grainy sweetness, and grassy hops.

Taste & Feel: The body is light medium and the mouthfeel is smooth and slightly crisp. The flavor up front is very light, with some cracker and cereal-bready malt flavors. In the middle, the cracker-like flavors are still there, but the cereal-breadiness becomes a bit grainy. Also in the middle, some grassy hop flavors start to come in and grow in the finish. The crisp finish is a mix of grainy malts and grassy hops, which fades after a minute or so in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: This is a light, crisp beer with some fairly bland flavors. I think it would go with a lot of foods, but given the German heritage of this beer, I think I’d pair it with some thick, tasty German sausages.

Overall Impression: This was a light, crisp, extremely drinkable beer, but it also had a good amount of flavor. I really enjoyed the cereal, bready, and grainy flavors from this beer, and the hop flavor balanced it perfectly. Drinking this, you can definitely see why the Germans refer to things like Budweiser as watered down swill. Overall, it was a good lighter beer, and it’s one I hope to drink a liter of one day in Germany.

My Rating: ★★★½☆
