I was up in Chicago for work and stopped at this brewery one evening a couple weeks ago. I tried a flight of their beers, and decided to get this one to bring home and review. I love the idea of the canned growler, but when I opened it, the can was several ounces short of being full. Today, I’m procrastinating getting some work done, so I thought I’d have a beer since I’m caught up on reviews and I’ve got WordPress working again on my phone.
Location: Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 6.5% ABV, ~200 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: Its light orange-amber in color and fairly clear. There’s a little bit of carbonation in it, but almost no head (even after pouring pretty vigorously). The aroma is very citrusy hoppiness (reminiscent of Three Floyds Zombie Dust).
Taste & Feel: The body is light-medium and the mouthfeel is lightly crisp. The flavor up front is a bready maltiness covered with hop citrusy flavors. In the middle, the citrusy hop flavors are joined by some pine-resinous hop flavors. The finish is mostly citrusy hop flavors with bitterness trailing it. There’s also some piney-resin hop flavors in the background. The citrusy bitterness lasts for a minute or so in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This is a mostly citrus hop flavored beer, and therefore, I think it would be a good pairing for lighter dishes. For me, I think this beer would go great with fish tacos or a southwestern style salad.
Overall Impression: I felt like this beer was trying to copy Three Floyds Zombie Dust in some ways, however, this one had a bit more hop flavors and bitterness going on. The resin-piney flavors in the background made the heavy citrus flavors even better. Overall, I thought this was a pretty good IPA with a big citrusy hop flavor. It was definitely the best of the flight I had, and gives me a reason to go back.
